Abstract

872,285. Universal joints. GARRINGTONS Ltd. March 26, 1958 [April 16, 1957], No. 12326/57. Class 80 (2). A constant velocity-ratio universal joint for motor vehicles of the kind wherein forks 11 on each shaft 10 having cylindrical engagement with pads 16 having flat faces bearing on similar pads on the complementary shaft fork has means preventing or permitting slight relative axial movement between the shafts, which means comprises rods 27 fixed between the forks of each shaft and sliding in grooves 34 at right angles in the outer faces of a tension-supporting bronze pad 28 held between them, each rod 27 bearing against a thrust-supporting member 29 having cylindrical engagement in a recess 35 in the other shaft. The main joint pads 16 are retained on the shaft forks by pins 19 or equivalent abutments on the forks. A two-part rubber casing 22 is retained by a band 26 on a ring 20 secured to one half of the joint by screws (Fig. 5, not shown) which may engage holes tapped in the end of one rod 27. The band may be used for balancing the joint. The motion of the flexible casing pumps grease or other lubricant around the joint. Specifications 735,464 and 756, 931 are referred to.
