Abstract

871,904. Pipe couplings. AEROQUIP A.G. Feb. 23, 1959 [April 28, 1958], No. 6208/59. Class 99(1). In a self-sealing pipe or hose coupling comprising engageable coupling members 10, 12 within which are located sealing valves 30, 48 respectively, a further valve 58, 60 mounted in the member 12 and adopted to close the latter to fluid flow, is positioned so as to be intermediate the valves 30, 48 when the members 10, 12 are coupled together. All the valves are spring biased so as to be urged to their closed positions and the arrangement is such that, on coupling engagement of the members 10, 12 the valve 58, 60 is operationally engaged with the valves 30, 48 and opening of the valve 48 occurs, followed by opening of the valves 10 and 58, 60. As shown, the member 10 has mounted therein a spider 26 in which the valve 30 is axially supported and is provided at one end with an annular inner flange 14 and at the other end with a hose adapter 28 screwed therein. The member 12 is similarly provided with a flange 38 and with an adapter 44 within which is affixed a spider 46 for supporting the valve 48. The intermediate valve is mounted within a sleeve 54 screwed into the member 12 and consists of a spring loaded disc-like, ported valve plate 58 and a check valve 60 slidable relative to each other and to the sleeve 54, the shank 66 of the valve 60 extending through an axial hole in the plate 58, and being screwed into a spring-loaded cap 68 which rests within a recess formed in the valve 48. The sleeve 54 is formed with an inner flange 56 provided with a resilient ring which sealingly contacts the member 10 when the members are coupled. The members 10, 12 are coupled by a nut 72 rotatably journalled on and axially fixed to the member 10 and adapted to screw on the sleeve 54, the nut 72 being manually rotatable by a spring biased knurled ring 76 rotatively secured thereto and axially slidable thereon. After screwing on the sleeve 54 the nut is locked in position by a peripheral hexagonal key abutment 80 on the sleeve 54 engaging a complementary recess 82 in the ring 76. Operation. When the members 10, 12 are uncoupled the valves 30, 48 sealingly engage the flanges 14, 38 respectively and the valve 60 and the plate 58 abut each other and seal the cavity between the valve 48 and the flange 56. As the members 10, 12 are moved towards each other upon coupling, the flange 14 engages the valve plate 58 and the valve 30 abuts the head 64 of the valve 60. Further relative axial movement causes the cap 68 to unseat the valve 48 and move the latter into engagement with the spider 46 whereupon movement of the valves 48, 60 will cease and at the end of the coupling operation the valve plate 58 will have been moved further to the right and the valve 30 unseated from the flange 14 whence fluid communication between the members 10, 12 is established. Specification 832,705 is referred to.
