Abstract
870,822. Pipe couplings. SPEMBLY Ltd., and THORNE, A.C. Oct. 20, 1959 [Oct. 20, 1958], No. 33401/58. Class 99(1). A pipe line coupling comprises two separable and coaxially arranged assemblies X, Y, each consisting of a tubular valve housing 1 provided at the outer end with a pipe connector 6, 14, and at the inner end with an annular valve seat 2 and enclosing a ball-shaped valve 3 adapted in the closed position to engage the valve seat and project therethrough, spring means 4 to press the ball valve against its seat, and a coupling member 17 releasably connecting the housings in coaxial alignment and adapted to open the fluid passageway through the seatings by effecting direct engagement of the ball valves. As shown, a fluid passageway is formed via holes 9 in spigots 7 in which the balls 3 are spring mounted. Sealing means is provided by adhesive 13 in a circumferential groove in body 5 which is a push fit in seating element 2. Sealing means may be provided between the two seatings in the form of a sealing ring either between the two seatings or recessed in annular grooves in the seatings. To locate the valves the balls 3 have a radial nipple 15 projecting into the hole of spigot 7 and/or a plurality of splines 16, which co-operate with the wall of the housing. The coupling member 17 may alternatively be a bayonet type fitting. The ball may be of metal or plastic.
