Abstract
744,428. Pipe couplings. PERISSE, R. Oct. 2, 1953 [Oct. 3, 1952 ; May 29, 1953], No. 27082/53. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XXIX] In a pipe-coupling, comprising in combination a circular-sectioned male member having an inner passage leading on one hand through an outlet channel 2a, Fig. 1, to one end of the member which is adapted to be connected with a conduit and on the other hand, through an inlet channel 2 to at least one orifice 3 at an intermediate point on the outer periphery of the member, and a female element consisting of a socket of which at least one portion is adapted to be slid over the member, two toroidal gaskets 19, 20, Fig. 2 of synthetic material are located in a single or two separate grooves 21, 22, respect. ively, in the inner wall of the element and symmetrically of an opening 15 which in the assembled position of the coupling registers with the orifices 3, Fig. 1, the gaskets co-operate with the outer surface of the member and have sealing surfaces of equal area. The one or more orifices 3 open into a peripheral groove 11, and the outer end 6 of member 1 is formed with a polygonal tool socket 7 whilst the channel is connected to the outlet .2a -by a chamber 8 which houses a :non-return ball-valve 9. The assembled position of the coupling is defined when the front of the member abuts a flange 18, Fig. 2. If the groove 11 is not provided the orifice 15 opens into a peripheral recess in the socket interior, not shown. In a modification, the member 1, Fig. 4, passes through the socket 36. In another embodiment the socket flange is of increased radial length or is replaced by a solid wall. In a further modification, the male member 52, Fig. 7, is formed with an axial inner passage 55 and an orifice 54, the passage housing a resilient and cylindrical valve 51, with an enlarged head 58, the outer end of which abuts a metal washer 60 retained by a body flange. A socket 61 is formed with an inner channel 66 leading to an annular groove 69 that registers with the orifice 54, the groove accommodating a pair of gaskets 70 which normally abut each other but are forced apart by liquid or grease flowing into the groove 69 ; an air vent passage 81 is also provided in the socket 61. When pressure liquid or grease impinges upon the valve 51 the latter is twisted and its end portion 82 is reduced in effective diameter ; reverse flow of the liquid or grease is prevented because the resulting back pressure compresses the valve 51 which accordingly tends to increase in diameter and obturate the orifice 54. The head of the valve may be retained by a cross pin, a screwed cap or any other device which completely or partly closes the valve end of the axial passage 55. In a further embodiment the valve may be formed with an intermediate part of reduced diameter which aligns with the radial duct, and the enlarged head may be dispensed with. When not in use, the male member may be closed by a socket member such as shown in Fig. 4, or a cap of synthetic material, not shown, and the function of the male and female parts may be reversed.
