Apparatus for the fermentation of solid organic waste materials comprises a horizontally disposed rotatable container having distributed along its length apertures or groups thereof each connected with separate supply means for aeration medium under pressure. As shown, waste materials are fed into the container 1 from its left-hand end, as indicated with an arrow A in Fig. 1. The container 1 rotates in the direction of an arrow B (see Fig. 4) and the contents C will then occupy substantially the position indicated in Fig 4. By means of the distribution box 4, aeration medium (preferably air) supplied by the blower 6 will be forced only through the apertures which are in a lower portion of the container, so that the aeration medium supplied will be compelled to pass through the contents of the container. The screen plate 8, Fig. 3, constitutes a closing device which cuts off the supply of aeration medium to the pipes leading to an uppermost portion of the container, so that during the rotation of the container aeration medium is only supplied to those pipes 3 which extend over a lowermost portion of the container. As each of the helically disposed valve boxes 2 is provided with aeration medium through a seaparate pipe, it is possible to supply aeration medium at the desired pressure to all valve boxes. The blowing of aeration medium from the individual valve boxes may also be regulated, if desired, by means of adjustable valves, which can be disposed in the boxes 2 or on the pipes 3. The fermented products can be removed from the container through a door 9 in the right-hand end plate (as shown in Fig. 1) of the container. Gaseous medium may escape from the container through the opening for feeding waste material and/or through the door 9.
