Abstract

1384475 Treating waste materials V STAHLSCHMIDT 7 March 1973 [20 June 1972] 11178/73 Heading C1C In a process wherein solid organic waste materials, e.g. house or vegetable refuse, with or without addition of sludge from sewage purification is subject to an aerobic thermophilic fermentation under the influence of blown air by passage through a horizontally rotating container, the discharge of air from the container is controlled by measuring the temperature and/or the composition of the air in the container. The invention further comprises an apparatus for. carrying out the process. As shown in Fig. 1, solid waste enters chamber 9 fitted with air duct 11 provided with temperature detector 12 and damper 13 and passes via hopper 19 into horizontally rotating container 1 provided with air supply pipes 6 connected to blower 7, and exit via doors 15, chamber 17 provided with temperature detector 12<SP>1</SP> and damper 13<SP>1</SP> to conveyer belt 18. Temperature detectors 12, or alternatively devices to measure the air composition, control dampers 13 and 13<SP>1</SP> which thereby control the air flow which may be in either direction or simultaneously in both directions. In Fig. 2 (not shown), both air ducts 11 and 11<SP>1</SP> are led to a common ventilator.
