Class 70 [Also in Group XIII] In a method of smoking and drying materials such as sheet rubber, heated air and smoke gases are distributed simultaneously and separately from a single source to different chambers of the apparatus wherein are placed the materials to be treated, the supplies of gases &c. being interchanged as the chambers are charged and emptied so that.the supplies of gases and air are continuously utilized. The apparatus has chambers 1, 2, 3 and a compartment 18 containing a fireplace 10 and spark-catcher 11, the compartment being closed at the top by a ceiling having a distributer 12 connected to ducts 20, 21, 22 leading to the chambers 1, 2, 3. Pipes 7, 8, 9 lead from the spark catcher 11, one to each of the ducts 20, 21, 22 and air entering the fireplace at 19 is heated and can pass into the ducts through openings 15, 16, 17 these openings and those of pipes 7, 8, 9 being controlled by valves 13, 14 attached to the distributer 12, rotation of this member causing different openings to be freed or closed to supply smoke or air to the chambers as desired.
