681,119. Moistening tobacco. AUSTRIA TABAKWERKE AKT.-GES., VORM. OSTERREICHISCHE TABAKREGIE. Oct. 4, 1950, No. 24257/50. Class 130. Bales 9 of oriental or other tobacco are supported on a grid 8 in a closed treatment space consisting of a basin 7 having a removable cover 10, the space being connected in a closed circuit with a moist air supply plant 13 by supply and discharge ducts 14. 16. A gasket 10' ensures sealing between the basin 7, which may be of non-corrosive sheet metal, and the cover 10, which may be hydraulically operated but which as shown is counterbalanced by a weight 12. To force the air to pass through the bales 9, which are preferably partly unwrapped, the portions of the grid between them are covered over. A damper 18 operated by the weight 12 interrupts the moist air supply when the cover 10 is raised. A plurality. of basins 7 may have individual supply plants 13 or a common supply plant. In another arrangement, described as being of known kind, a number of open basins are situated in a common chamber to which moist air is supplied, each basin being fitted with an extraction ventilator which feeds back to a common supply plant.
