In means for fluidizing powdered substances, e.g. fuel, in a hopper 1 and conveying them through a duct 19 by means of air or other gas passed upwardly through the permeable false bottom 3, the space between this false bottom and the bottom 4 is divided into separate compartments 6 ... 9 to which air is admitted through pipes 10 ... 13 controlled by valves 15 ... 18, air being admitted only to the compartment 9 beneath that part of the hopper containing the inlet to the duct 19 until it becomes desirable to level the surface of the material in the hopper by switching the air to each of the other compartments in turn for a short period.
