Abstract

<PICT:0820447/III/1> A fluidized-bed reactor 10 for two-stage roasting operations which has a perforated bed support plate 14, a plenum chamber 17, 18 below the plate to which fluidizing gas is supplied by pipes 20, 21, feeding and discharge pipes 22, 24, respectively, for the materials disposed to maintain a predetermined bed level, a partition 13 which divides the reactor into chambers 11, 12 and may be continued into the plenum chamber, an aperture 23 in the partition disposed within the bed, and pipes 25, 28 for discharging the gases from the chambers, is provided with dust separators 26, 29 on the pipes 25, 28, respectively, and with means for discharging the contents of the separators either to the compartment 12 for further treatment or out of the system. The apparatus may be used for roasting arsenical pyrites, the arsenic and a part of the sulphur being removed in chamber 11 and the residual sulphur in chamber 12.
