In a hopper 10 for powdered material provided with fluidizing means 33 for assisting the flow to an outlet 17, the lower part of the hopper is divided into compartments 18. . . 26, Fig. 1, by vertical partitions 16 extending to the bottom of the container and fluidizing means is provided in the floor of each compartment. The floor of the compartment 26 is composed of four flat downwardly-inclined sections surrounding the outlet 17 and the floors of the other compartments also are downwardly inclined towards the outlet. Rectangular openings 30, 31 are formed in the bottom of the partitions to allow material to pass from the outer compartments into the central compartment 26. Each fluidizing means 33 comprises a plenum chamber 34, Fig. 4, the top of which comprises a rigid perforated member 36 which is covered by a rigid, or semi-rigid, permeable plastic membrane 37.
