Abstract

885,525. Pneumatic conveyers. PATON, H. N. K. Dec. 22, 1958 [Dec. 20, 1957], No. 41386/58. Class 78 (1). A fluidizing unit is designed to do away with the necessity for a plenum chamber below the porous support for the material. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the unit 22 rests on the floor 15 of a compartment 10 which has an outlet 18 in the lower part of the wall 14. The unit comprises a body 25 formed of a material having minute interconnected cells therethrough which open outwardly from a face 27. A distributing network of small closely spaced channels 30 extends throughout a section of the body which as shown is separated from the face 27 by a part 32 of the body, but there may be several networks of these channels at different levels. The unit may be formed by mating triangular sections 33, 34, the adjacent sides 35 of which are sealed. A header 36, to which gas is admitted by a pipe 37, extends across an end edge and a side edge of the unit. In the unit 40, Fig. 6, a layer 45 of fabric of fairly close weave is secured to the surface 41 and the lower surface 48 is sealed by a layer 49 of gas-impervious material, e.g. rubberized canvas. The edges are sealed by strips of similar material 50. This unit may be modified by forming the network of distributing channels in the bottom of the unit. The bottom of a silo may consist of a number of inclined units, each of which is a sector of a circle, or a triangular portion of a rectangle, leading to an outlet at the centre. The unit 81 is shown in Fig. 11 applied to the lower part of a conduit 80. Gas inlets 84, 85 extending through the bottom of the conduit deliver gas to headers 86, 87 incorporated in the unit. The unit may be applied to a container which comprises a collapsible bag (Fig. 15, not shown).
