Abstract

1342373 Pneumatic conveyers FREE-FLOW PACKAGING CORP 20 Oct 1971 [2 Nov 1970] 48708/71 Heading B8A In a system for distributing lightweight particulate material, e.g. expanded polystyrene particles, from a hopper 14 to a series of distributing points 18, the hopper is connected to a venturi section 30 of a conveying duct 16 by way of a screened venting section 24 and each distributing point 18 is closable by a valve 40 and has a screened venting section 38 of an area greater than that of section 24. In operation, with the valves 40 closed and the screened sections 38 filled with particulate material, air from a blower 20 passes into the venturi 30 and since the system is in a state of rest, creates an area of high pressure in the region of the hopper outlet to retain the material therein, the air being dissipated through the screen section 24. When a valve 40 is opened to discharge the material stored in the respective screened section 38, the material on being discharged will uncover the screened section 38 and thereby cause an air flow from the blower to the respective screened section. The said air flow through the venturi creates a vacuum to draw material into the air flow to replace that discharged from the screened section. As soon as the air flow through the screened section 38 is prevented once again by material therein the system reverts to its "rest" condition. The system has a plurality of distributing points 18 and the branches connecting successive distributing points 18 are arranged at an angle to the main duct to ensure proper distribution, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown). In a modification Fig. 9 (not shown) the junction of the branch with the main duct is formed as a venturi to ensure correct distribution of the material. The venturi 36 at the outlet of the hopper is provided with clamps (80) Fig. 5 (not shown) whereby to adjust the crosssection thereof to suit the system.
