Abstract
<PICT:0804365/III/1> <PICT:0804365/III/2> <PICT:0804365/III/3> A reactor for the treatment of material in a fluidized state comprises a flared trough in the bottom of which is a longitudinal slit which has a narrow grating therein, said grating comprising a row of links each of which is provided with supporting elements which bear on the inner wall of the trough and correspond in shape to the adjacent portion of the furnace wall. In use the links are moved into and through the reactor. In the illustrated embodiment, the reactor chamber 1 (see Fig. 2) is provided with a series of parallel troughs in the bottom of each of which is a grating made up of links 5. These links pass through the chamber, as shown in Fig. 1, and (see Fig. 4) are provided with supporting projections 6 which bear upon a constricted lower portion 7 of the trough whilst air from beneath may pass through the space in between the link and reactor wall; the fluidizing gas thereby flows substantially parallel to the trough wall and prevents the deposition of adhesive material. The movement of the links may be effected either by traction or by pushing and can be made continuous either by detaching an expelled link from the output end and attaching one to the input end or by building the links into an endless grating. Two receptacles 8 (Fig. 1) at the inlet and outlet of the reactor contain non-fluidized granulated substance and communicate with the reactor above the grating via apertures 10. As a result of the entry of some of the fluidizing gas into the left-hand receptacle, the latter permits the passage out of the reactor of heavier particles which settle on the grate. Some of the material from the lefthand receptacle passes out and may be separated from the heavier particles and returned; some of the material from the right-hand container passes into the fluidized bed. It is stated that the reactor may be used for reacting materials which form agglomerated masses in the reactor, as in Specifications 798,501 and 798,502.
