A braking system for a railway vehicle comprises a brake to decelerate a wheel, brake applying means under the control of an operator, including a bell-crank lever 15 pivotably secured intermediate its end to a part of the vehicle frame by pin 16, one end of the lever 15 supporting the frame and having associated therewith one end of a leaf-type spring 10, the other end of the lever being associated with the brake applying means whereby an actuation thereof beyond a predetermined value angularly moves the bell-crank lever to separate the frame and the end of the lever adjacent thereto, the braking effected thereafter being varied in accordance with the weight of the vehicle frame carried by the spring 10. The vacuum cylinder 1 having its piston 3 linked through rod 4, levers and rods 6, 5, 6a, 25, 26, 22, 27, 28a, 29 and 32 to a floating lever 35 having mounted thereon a monitor brake shoe 36 which is engaged with a wheel rim 37. When the piston 3 is operated, the monitor brake shoe is pressed against the wheel rim and the frictional force therein causes, according to the direction of wheel rotation, the floating lever 35 to be moved one way or the other to operate through triangularly-shaped plates 60, a rod 62 which pivots levers 64 so as to cause by thrust through pins 85 in recesses 82, the engagement of the main friction pads 54 with the sides of the wheels.
