The fluid-pressure engine described in the parent Specification and comprising an engine piston reciprocated in one direction by fluid pressure and controlled, on the pressure stroke, by hydraulic damping fluid forced through a variable-setting valve into a reservoir has a container for liquid connected with the engine cylinder and subjected to steam pressure for providing the said fluid pressure for operating the engine piston. The container for the liquid (such as water) may be formed with cooling fins and is provided in its top wall with a valve-controlled steam inlet and in its bottom wall with a valve-controlled fluid-inlet conduit leading to the inlet of the cylinder. The fluid pressure is supplied through the valvecontrolled inlet to the engine cylinder so as to move the piston and thereby displace the hydraulic damping fluid on the other side of the piston through a passage controlled by the variable-setting valve to a reservoir surrounding a pump cylinder, the piston of which is on the same rod as the engine piston. The engine piston at each end of its stroke, is arranged automatically to control a valve thereby exhausting the pressure fluid from the engine cylinder.
