862,090. Hydraulic power units. GLAS, M. Aug. 23, 1957 [Aug. 23, 1956], No. 26666/57. Class 69 (2). An hydraulic unit providing rapid-feed, compression and return strokes using only half the usual amount of fluid, consists of a piston rod 4 with a large piston 36 in a main cylinder 26 and a small piston 19 in a rapid-feed cylinder 22. Fluid is fed via ports 1, 42. 43 to space 12<SP>1</SP> and pushes piston 19 downwards, fluid displaced from below piston 36 flowing via lines 10<SP>1</SP>, 6, 10 to space 7. When tool on end 4<SP>11</SP> of piston rod comes into contact with the workpiece and the pistons stop, fluid flows via ports 1 and 42, line 2 and ports 8 and 9 to push a pressure-transmitting piston 18 downwards to block line 10 and initiate the compression stroke, while fluid from space 17 escapes via ports 49, 48, line 45 and ports 47, 13. The fluid from below piston 36 now flows via lines 11<SP>1</SP> and 11 to space 12 where it and fluid displaced by piston 19 is exhausted via port 48, line 45 and ports 47, 13. At the end of the stroke, inlet and outlet ports 1, 13 are reversed (by undisclosed means). Fluid forces piston 18 upwards and as soon as ports 10 are cleared the rapid return stroke begins. In a modification, the end 4<SP>11</SP> of the piston rod has a sleeve 32 surrounding it actuated by a piston 29 in a cylinder inside a modified large piston 36b. The piston precedes the rod 4<SP>11</SP>, e.g. in order to hold down material to be riveted before the riveting operation begins.
