1,143,003. Percussive tools. DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 29 Nov., 1966 [10 Nov., 1965], No. 47714/65. Heading B4C. A liquid-pressure actuated percussive tool' such as a road breaker, comprises a working piston 9 connected to a tool 3 and a recoil piston 23 connected to the working piston and adapted to compress liquid in a pressure chamber 18 during a working stroke in order to return the working piston, valve means 28 being provided for controlling communication between a working chamber 15 and the pressure chamber via a passage 27. Pressurized liquid is fed into the chamber 15 via an inlet 17 to act on the piston 9 and effect a working stroke. Soon after the start of the stroke a port 28 is closed so that the piston 23 compresses the liquid in the chamber 18 in order to effect the return stroke. Due to the compression of the liquid the latter leaks between the piston 23 and its cylinder 21 and is returned to the chamber 15 via a groove 24 and a passage 25. The loss of liquid in the chamber 18 is made up by liquid flowing from chamber 15 via a passage 27 and port 28. The working piston may, in addition to the compressed liquid, be returned by a spring.
