Abstract

937,206. Percussive tools. F. H. FLOTTMANN, [trading as INGENIEURBURO DIPL.-ING. FRIEDRICH HEINRICH FLOTTMANN]. Nov. 17, 1959 [Nov. 17, 1958], No. 38984/59. Class 124. A control for a hydraulically operated percussive tool comprises a control slide valve responsive to hydraulic pressure in the cylinder and effecting initiation of the return stroke only when the hydraulic pressure at the rear of the piston rises momentarily as a result of the impact of the piston on the tool. As shown, a hydraulic piston 5 is acted upon by pressure liquid from an annular space 2 in a control valve to produce an impact on a tool 16, the pressure liquid also acting, through an annular chamber 17a in an auxiliary valve 25 integral with the piston, and a pipe 10, on one end of the piston 6 of a control valve. A spring 9 also acts to urge the piston 6 against a stop 7. As the piston 5 moves towards the tool 16, the pipe 10 is shut off from the space 17a and connected to a vent 18. On the piston 5 striking the tool 16 a momentary rise in pressure in the chamber 4 causes the valve 6 to lift off the stop 7 and allows the full hydraulic pressure to act on the whole of the face 19 of the valve and move it, against the spring 9, to the position shown in Fig. 2. The pressure liquid now acts on both upper and lower faces of the piston 5 but, since the lower face has a greater area than the upper face the piston moves towards its initial position. When the pipe 10 is again in communication with the space 17a pressure liquid again acts on the valve 6 to move it towards the seat 7 and the cycle may be repeated. If the tool 16 is not in position the piston will cover the pipe 13 preventing pressure liquid acting on the lower face of the piston 5 and the tool will come to rest. The exhaust liquid may be used to rotate the tool.
