[Also in Group XL (a)] An hydraulic system for obtaining accurate movement control of a member, such as the control rod of an atomic reactor press, valve or tool in a copying lathe, comprises a jack coupled to the member, and a unidirectional pump coupled to one side only of the jack for its supply and withdrawal of liquid from that side to effect movement of the member in either of two opposed directions. The jack consists of a hollow piston-rod 3 which is secured to a stationary member 4 and has a piston 2 slidable in a cylinder 1 secured to the member to be controlled. The bore of the piston-rod is connected to a supply of gas 27, preferably nitrogen, which acts on the full area of the piston, and a tube 5 is disposed in the bore and connects the annular area of the piston to a line 21 and valves 20, 23 leading to opposite sides of the pump 12 which is driven by a motor 13 and connected to a tank 14; the tube has a number of holes 6 leading to the annular side of the piston so that a cushioning effect is provided at the end of the stroke of the jack. The valves 20, 23 are solenoid operated and, when valve 20 is open and valve 23 closed, the pump supplies liquid pressure to the annular side of the piston to raise the cylinder against the pressure of gas acting on the full area of the piston. When valve 20 is closed and valve 23 is opened, the gas pressure moves the cylinder downwardly at a rate determined by the flow of liquid from the annular side of the piston through the valve 23 and pump 12 which now acts to meter the flow of liquid, the liquid then passing through a oneway valve 17, filter 18 and relief valve 25 to the tank 14. In order to lower the cylinder rapidly, for instance in an emergency, a solenoidoperated vent valve 32 is closed, a valve 33 automatically opens so that liquid from the annular side of the piston can pass directly to the tank 14 and the gas pressure acting on the full area of the piston rapidly extends the jack. The valves 20, 23 may be operated so as to lock the jack in a predetermined position. In the event of the gas pressure dropping below a predetermined safe limit, a pressure-responsive switch 31 is actuated to operate the valve 32 to rapidly lower the cylinder, as before. Similar action occurs if the level in the tank 14 drops and actuates a switch 37 or if the pressure from the pump 12 falls and actuates a switch 36. Leakage of fluid past seals 9 on the rod passes through a passage 10 into a collecting chamber 11 secured to the cylinder.
