Electric motor 1 drives winch pulley 15 through gearing 9, 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, 12 andshaft 14, gearing 19, 18, 18, 17, gearing 17 being part of pulley 15. A self-sustaining gear is incorporated into shaft 14, by means of nut 22. This nut is rigid with gear 19 and screws on to shaft 14 to wedge ratchet 24 against flange 21 formed on said shaft, and the ratchet 24 co-operates with pawls 27, so as to prevent any tendency for the load to fall under its own weight.
