Abstract
540,056. Capstans. CLAXTON, A. H. April 10, 1940, No. 6493. [Class 78 (v)] The drum 9 of a capstan is driven through a crown bevel wheel 18 from a shaft 14 itself rotated by bevel gearing 13, 16 from a vertical shaft 5 within a casing 7 about which the drum itself rotates. The bottom of the shaft 5 is turned by a bevel wheel 4 engaged by a wheel on a horizontal shaft driven through belt, chain or clutch. The bed-plate 12 carrying the gearing 13, 16, 17 and shaft 14 is fixedly mounted on top of the casing 7, and may be covered by plate 19. Detent pawls 10 on the drum co-operate with teeth 11 on'the base. Squared ends on the shaft 14 permit of manual operation.
