Class 120(3) A stuffer-box crimper, having an elongated crimping chamber and rolls feeding yarn, tow, sliver or like fibrous material into one end thereof against the pressure of the compacted crimped yarn &c. therein, comprises means reciprocating the yarn &c. axially along the feed rolls so that it is distributed across the full width or diameter of the chamber. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a guide roll 30, driven through gears 25, 34, in synchronism with feed rolls 15 and 16 or frictionally driven by roll 16, has a peripheral inclined groove 31 whereby yarn &c. is applied directly or indirectly to the nip of, and reciprocated across, the feed rolls. In the embodiment of Fig. 3, the reciprocating feed is applied by means of a peripheral groove 56 in a roll 55 which is mounted on a sphere 57 so that it may be tilted adjustably by screws 60 threaded through a disc 59 driven from a belt 64. Fig. 4, shows a feed bar 65 guiding yarn &c. through an eyelet 69 and caused to oscillate slidably in brackets 66 by engagement with an adjustable cam disc 74 and the action of a spring 80. In another form of stuffer-box crimper having a chamber of rectangular cross-section, Fig. 5 (not shown), a guide roll has a double helical groove whereby yarn &c. is moved across the chamber and back for each two revolutions of the guide roll, Fig. 6 (not shown): this roll may be mounted on a pivoted bracket which is weighted to maintain the roll against the feed roll by which it is rotated, Fig. 9 (not shown).
