Classes 120(2) and 120(3) Filament crimping apparatus comprises a pair of contsant speed rollers forcing a filament into a packing chamber or stuffing box which is closed at the outlet end by counter-pressure means the movement of which, in response to change in filament pressure in the chamber, moves a pivoted thread guide so that the position at which the crimped filament enters the rip between constant speed, conical withdrawal rollers is correctively adjusted so that the chamber is always evenly filled. As shown, a filament 1 fed by rollers 2, 3, into a tube 4 constituting a chamber 5 is compressed therein to form a plug which is forced against a displaceable piston 6 through an axial hole 7 of which the filament leaves the chamber. The lower and upper parts of chamber 5 are heated and cooled to set the crimp in the filament therewithin. The free arm 9 of an elbow lever 8 bears on the piston 6 movement of which rocks lever 8 about pin 11 so that an eyelet or forked filament guide on the other arm 10 moves the crimped filament along rollers 13, 14, through which it passes to be wound under uniform tension and speed on to a package 16 by a drum 15. A thread guide 21, shown in Fig. 3, is formed on a single arm lever 18 which is pivoted by enforced movement of a roller 19 in a guide member 20 adjustably secured to the chamber housing.
