Abstract

969,622. Spinning, finishing and winding yarns. JOSEPH BANCROFT & SONS CO. Nov. 24, 1960 [Dec. 21, 1959], No. 40477/60. Headings D1F and D1J. Fibres in continuous filamentary form e.g. tow or yarn, are crimped and packaged by apparatus comprising rolls feeding the fibres into the inlet end of a tube (constituting a crimping chamber) against a mass of previously crimped fibres held compacted therein and exerting pressure for advancing the mass along the tube to the discharge end where the mass emerges as a continuous core corresponding to the bore of the tube. The core is wound on to a support with, and is held and compacted by, a separating tape in successive convolutions therewith. The package may be processed to set the crimp by the method described in Specification 969,625 and it is then unwound e.g. by the apparatus described in Specification 969,624, to remove or expose the core. The tow or yarn may be pulled from the core and directly wound or packaged. As shown, material 20 to be crimped is advanced through a pretreating tank 22 and a drier 24 thence through a tension device 25 and guide 26 to spring-loaded, adjustably-driven feed rolls 10 and 11 which force the material into a tube 4 removably mounted in a heating and crimping block 2. Tube 4 extends, by means of a pivoted feed tube 33, to a position where the core 40 discharging at the arcuate surface 39 may be wound with a tape 50 on to a package 41. The package is wound on a sock 66 (which also forms a confining cover for the completed package) positioned over a perforated tube 42 carried by a sleeve 43 slidably mounted on, and keyed to a shaft 44 driven from a gearbox 46 through a constant torque clutch: a cam 47 actuates a traversing slide 48 which reciprocates sleeve 43 for laying the core in successive convolutions and layers. The tape 50 supplied from a reel 51 passes through a forked arm 54, to a rough surfaced feed and control roll 55, around a pin 56, over a pivoted lever 57, thence over guide roll 58 to meet the core 40 at the end of tube 33: lever 57 carries an arm 61 which, in the event of a break or failure of the tape supply, actuates a microswitch 62 to stop the entire apparatus, although this operation may be manually suspended during a starting or heating period.
