Abstract
868,763. Control of A.C. motors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 8, 1959 [June 6, 1958], No. 18141/58. Class 38 (3). Relates to a control arrangement in which power is passed between the rotor windings of an induction motor 1 and the armature 6 of a D.C. motor through a rectifier 5, the induction motor being coupled directly to the D.C. motor which has a shunt field winding 8 connected between variable tappings of a potentiometer 9 providing excitation current in either direction. In normal operation, the voltage at the terminals of the rectifier 5 is just sufficient to overcome the back-E.M.F. of the D.C. motor, but, to run the motor at a speed corresponding to that obtained if the slip-rings 3 were short-circuited, it is necessary to compensate for the voltagedrop across the rectifier. This is achieved by reversing the field excitation of the D.C. motor so that its back-E.M.F. is reversed and has a value corresponding to the voltage-drop. The motor may be started by means of a liquid resistor 11 or by grid control of the rectifier 5. The D.C. motor may be used as an exciter to operate the induction motor as a synchronous machine. This is effected by means of a threepole switch to open-circuit or to short-circuit three of the rectifier arms and permit directcurrent to flow to the secondary windings of the motor 1 through the other three arms, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown).
