Abstract

694,135. Dynamo-electric machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 31, 1951 [Feb. 16, 1950], No. 2449/51. Class 35. A variable speed D.C. motor comprises a polarized rotor and a stationary armature having three windings 1, 2, 3 energized in succession by means of a distributer switch 19 through saturable reactors 25, 29, 33 which serve to facilitate the commutation. The rotor field winding 4 is energized through slip-rings 6, 7 and a controlling rheostat 12 from the D.C. mains 10, 11. If desired, a quadrature commutating winding 14 energized through sliprings 15, 16 may be connected in the armature circuit. The distributer 19 may comprise a series of cam-operated contacts, but as shown it consists of a series of stationary contacts 1c, 2c, 3c, which are energized in sequence by a conducting arm 21 mounted on the rotor shaft 5 and connected through a rheostat 24 to the supply line 10. In order to assist commutation, each stator winding is connected to its corresponding distributer segment through a saturable reactor whose control winding is energized in dependence on the voltage across the other two windings. Thus, for example, winding 1 is connected to 1c through coil 26 of reactor 25 whose control winding 27 is connected in series with resistor 28 across stator windings 2 and 3.
