Abstract

698,134. Frequency changers. LAURENCE, SCOTT & ELECTROMOTORS, Ltd., and WOODS, J. V. May 6, 1952 [May 8, 1951], No. 10808/51. Class 35. A converter 6, 7 which converts current applied to its slip-rings 4 at one frequency to current at another frequency at its commutator, is driven by a pony motor 5 whose stator carries an additional winding 3 inductively linked to its normal stator winding 2 and serving to supply the slip-rings 4 by transformer action with current of the same or a different number of phases. In the form shown the stator 7 is unwound, the pony motor is a simple squirrel-cage motor fed through isolating switches and overload cut-outs 1, but in a modification, it may have a wound rotor connected through slip-rings to a speed-regulating resistance. In a further modification, the pony motor is a three-phase shunt stator-fed commutator machine whose brushes are connected back to the line through an induction regulator for speed control. Alternatively the motor brushes may be connected to the converter slip-ring brushes and both connected to the winding 3, the voltage of which may be bucked or boosted by an induction regulator. By this means simultaneous control of voltage and frequency is obtained.
