Abstract
1,020,643. Induction motors. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 19, 1964 [July 19, 1963], No. 28799/63. Heading H2A. In a wound-rotor induction motor, the use of slip-rings is avoided by connecting a resistor R permanently across each rotor coil 8, and S.C.R.'s or thyratrons D 1 , D 2 which may be rendered conducting to short-circuit the resistor when a trigger voltage is generated in windings 9, 10 on an auxiliary rotor. Variable excitation of the auxiliary stator thus acts to control the motor speed. The auxiliary generator produces high-frequency current, e.g. from short-pitched coils as shown in Fig. 2, currentlimiting resistors r and reverse-current-stopping diodes d being connected in series with them. The auxiliary stator may be of high pole number and its field have opposite rotation to the main machine. Full-wave operation of the auxiliary windings 9, 10 may be achieved by using full-wave or polyphase rectifiers at d, and the trigger-pulse may be lengthened by inductance. Two auxiliary machines may be used to provide alternative values of resistance. Speed control may be achieved by tachometric control of the on/off time of the auxiliary stator energization. The machine may operate as a single-phase repulsion motor by limiting the auxiliary stator winding to arcuate sections only.
