Abstract

868,448. Thermionic valves. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON-HOUSTON. March 10, 1960 [March 13, 1959], No. 8507/60. Class 39(1). A hydrogen-filled discharge tube comprises two hydrogen reservoirs 25, 26, one being arranged to be heated simultaneously with the heating of the cathode 5 and the other being arranged in thermal contact with the anode 4. As shown, reservoir 25 comprises a nickel tube filled with titanium or zirconium hydride and surrounded by an aluminia-coated heating element 29 and a thermal screen 30. The heating element 29 is connected between terminal 31 and thermal screen 30 which is connected to one of the cathode heater terminals. The reservoir 26 may comprise a circular groove in the anode filled with a metal hydride and covered with molybdenum foil 33 spotwelded to the anode. Alternatively, the reservoir 26 may comprise a metal hydride contained in an annular compartment within the anode which is formed by two external discs welded to a central disc and spotwelded to a ring, the internal diameter of which is greater than the diameter of the central disc so as to provide the compartment. Also, reservoir 25 may be in thermal contact with the cathode.
