Abstract

867,763. Moulding insulation around conductors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Feb. 29, 1960 [March 4, 1959], No. 7091/60. Class 87(2). Insulation including a thermosetting or thermoplastic binder is moulded around a conductor by enclosing the conductor and insulation in a pressure - constructable mould, enclosing the mould in a heat shrinkable material, gradually heating said material to cause it to constrict while the insulation binder is in a fluid state, and thereafter causing said binder to solidify while the insulation is constricted. A stator bar having conductor strands 4 insulated at 4a and comprising a straight portion to be fitted into the slot of an armature and curved end portions is wound with layers of insulating tape 5 coated and impregnated with a binding thermosetting resin and the straight section is then enclosed in a mould comprising opposed angle pieces 6, 7. The mould is surrounded with a heatshrinkable tape 12 and placed in a tank which is evacuated and heated, sections 6a, 7a determining the width of the insulation. Hydraulic pressure is then applied to the mould by introducing molten asphalt to the tank at aout 150‹C. and is maintained until the resin is cured. A thermoplastic binder which may comprise the pressure fluid may alternatively be used and with thermosetting binders a tape may be provided to prevent contamination of the insulation by the pressure fluid.
