866,174. Testing strength of fabrics. TREITEMENTS CHIMIQUES DES TEXTILES. June 1, 1959 [June 2, 1958], No. 18543/59. Class 106 (2). Fabrics, paper and other sheet materials are tested for strength by gripping the fabric between two hollow jaws 9, 10 of a gripping device 2, 3 and allowing a stylus 14 to descend on to the fabric within the jaws under the control of a dashpot 23, the force exerted by the stylus being regulated by an adjustable weight 21. Jaw 9 is rigidly attached to member 2, and jaw 10 is pivotally mounted in a fork positioned at the end of branch 3 thus permitting close contact of the jaws which are provided with central apertures 12, the facing surfaces of the jaws being provided with serrations 13 to grip firmly the material under test. After the material has been inserted and gripped between the jaws, a blocking lever 32 is released allowing the piston of a dashpot 23 to descend, thus ensuring that the same force is applied by stylus 14 to the material under test for any given position of the weight 21 on a graduated arm 19 which is connected to the stylus 14 at pivot 18 and to member 2 at pivot 20. By setting the weight 21 at a position slightly below that which would result in perforation of material of normal strength, damaging of such material is avoided.
