Abstract
864,990. Tensile testing machines. TECQUIPMENT Ltd., and POPE, J. A. Oct. 5, 1959 [July 17, 1958], No. 22920/58. Class 106 (2). Tensile testing apparatus comprises a frame 3, 4 slidably mounted on a base 1 and holding a recording sheet 15, a pillar 12 on the base 1 and means 24 to move the frame 3, 4, to subject a specimen 11, gripped between the frame and the pillar 12, to a tensile stress and a marking point 17 carried by the pillar to make a record on the surface of the sheet 15. The test piece 11 is gripped by clamps 10, 13 and is stressed by turning a hand wheel 30, thus turning a wormwheel 22 to move a screw 21 axially. When tension is applied, the pillar 12 flexes slightly and so the marker 17, moving in unison with an arm 14 attached to the pillar 12, indicates the load applied. The recording sheet 15, which may comprise a sheet of smoked glass, is attached to the frame 3, 4, and moves to give an indication of the strain in the specimen. The recording sheet 15 is adjustable along the frame 3, 4 and the marker 17 which is carried by a pivoted arm 18 is angularly adjustable. To ensure that no bending stresses are set up in the specimen, the clamp 13 acts on the pillar 12 through a knife edge 28. If desired, projection apparatus (not shown) may be used to project an image of the record sheet 15 on to a screen.
