1,063,336. Recording apparatus for tensile testing apparatus. RIKAGAKU KENKYUSHO and KAWASAKI SEITETSU KABUSHHIKI KAISHA. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 31, 1963; Sept.28, 1963(3)], No.31471/64. Headings G1J and G1S. In a device for testing the tensile stress of a specimen 1, there is provided means for detecting elongation and width contraction of a specimen 1, the movement of elongation marking means being amplified by means 2 and transmitted through a cord 4 to rotate drums 67 mounting recording paper, which move against a pen 16. The cord 4 is further wound round a drum 9 geared to a drum 8 to rotate it at the same speed as drum 7. Changes in width of the specimen are transmitted through a weighted cord 5 to move a pen 11 along recording paper mounted on drum 8. The specimen 1 is clamped by two spring-loaded clamps 28 against knife edges 29 supported respectively by a casing 26 and a spring-loaded ram 27 mounted on member 33. Pulleys 36-40 are mounted between the casing 26 and member 33 so that as the specimen elongates under stress, relative movement between the parts 26, 33 is magnified by the pulley system and relayed to the string 4 subsequently causing rotation of recording drums 6, 8. Amicrometer 34 is provided to check the spacing of the knife edges 29. The width contraction device comprises contact pieces 49, 49' and biased towards each other to grip the specimen by a spring 53, and a weight 12 attached to a string 5 wound around a drum 45 mounted on a screw-rod 43 extending between the two parts 46, 51. Hence in use, contraction of the specimen caused elongation of the string 5 which is attached to the recording pen 12. A load transmitting rod 13 moved through means 18, 23, 24 by the pendulum 25 of the testing machine supports a pen 16 movable across the recording drum 6 the pen 16 being balanced by a weighted pulley system 14, 14', 15, 17. The ratio of the indicated load to the actual load may be adjusted, see Fig. 5, by altering the position of contact of roller 23 on the spring biased lever 24 by operation of screw 58 of a vernier gauge 60. A logarithmic scale may be recorded on the recording paper.
