585,242. Indicating tension in webs &c. - BOWATER'S PAPER MILLS, Ltd., WALMSLEY, S. E., and ROBERTS, G. R. Nov. 2, 1944, No.. 21423. [Class 106 (ii)] A device for indicating or recording the tension of an endless web or the like, shown as applied to the wire mesh conveyer belt 1 of a Fourdrinier paper-making 'machine, comprises a tensioning-roller 2 attached to a plunger displaceable in a casing 4 (not shown), compression springs being arranged in the casing, one above and one below an end abutment of the plunger, the casing being slidably mounted and provided with a projection 10 contacting the spring- biassed plunger 11 of an indicator consisting of a finger 20 movable over a scale which is mounted to move with the roller 2 and is displaceable according to the displacement of the roller in space to compensate for varying angles of contact of the web 1 with the roller. The plunger 11 is connected to a bell-crank lever 15 in a casing 12 movable with the roller 2, this' lever being connected by slot and pin means to a carriage 18, slidable in guides 19, carrying the pointer 20 movable over a scale 30 on a drum 21. The roller 2 with the associated plunger can be displaced by the casing 4 by rotating a wheel 14 which operates worm gearing through a shaft 13 to depress the casing 4, a scale 31 co-operating with an indicator 32 registering the position of the roller. Since the pressure applied by the roller 2 is not directly proportional to the tension of the wire 1 on account of the varying angle that the wire makes with the roller as the latter is depressed, the drum 21 carrying the scale is arranged to be rotated as the tension roller 2 is lowered by means of a rope 26 secured to and passing round a pulley 25 on the drum 21. The free end of the rope passes over a pulley mounted on the fixed frame 29 of the machine and is provided with a weight. The drum 21 has a series of inclined graduations 30 or a number of sets of graduations arranged to compensate the reading of the pointer 20 in accordance with the position of,the roller 2. A permanent recording-apparatus such as an inking-stylus engaging a moving chart may be incorporated with the tension indicator.
