Abstract

In a tensile strength testing apparatus, the tensile force exerted on a specimen 17 Fig.1 is measured by a dynamometer 4 incorporating strain gauges 10. The strain is measured by an extensometer 18 Figs. 1 and 3 comprising bracket parts 21, 22 respectively fixed to two parallel bars 25, and bracket parts 23, 24 which are slidably adjustable on the bars. The bracket parts each have a cutting edge 28, which edges are arranged in pairs urged together by springs (not shown) on the bars 25 to grip the specimen between them as shown. The spacing between the two bars 25 is selectively adjustable whereby the cutting edges can be set in the required datum positions gripping the specimen prior to the application of the loading tension. In operation, the upper and lower brackets, Fig. 1 are guided parallel to one another by telescopic P.T.F.E. sleeves 31 as the specimen is stretched, inner sleeves 32 being attached to the upper brackets and outer sleeves 33 to the lower. The relative displacement between coacting inner and outer sleeves is sensed by movement of a core 40 within a coil 36. The two coils 36 and the strain gauges are connected to an XÀY recorder which produces a force/elongation curve of the test.
