Abstract
1,012,283. Optical gauging-measuring strain. TRAVAUX PUBLICS MINISTRE DES. April 8, 1963 [April 6,1962], No. 13882/63. Heading G1M. In a device for measuring minute displacements, two gratings 12,14 bearing similar arrays of fine parallel spaced lines thereon, are mounted in parallel planes and with the line array on one grating at a small angle to the other, by "T"- shaped members 11,13 the ends of which pass through apertures 1a, 2a, 1b, 2b in supports 1, 2 connected by flexing springs 3, 4. The members 11,13 are fulcrummed on knife edges connected to supports 1, 2 by spring members 6, 7, 9, 10. Knife edges 5, 8 are connected to reference points whose relative displacement is to be measured, e.g. two points on a structure if the device is to be used as a strain gauge, and relative movement of knife edges 5, 8 causes rotation of members 11, 13 either in the same direction, see Fig. 2, or in opposite directions, see Fig. 1. In the embodiment of Fig.1 this rotation increases the angle between the line arrays and thus alters the spacing between the interference fringes formed by the gratings. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 the net effect of rotating members 11, 13 is a parallel relative displacement between the line arrays thus causing a bodily shift of the fringe lines observed. The supports 1, 2 may be made of a material having a low thermal expansion coefficient and micrometer means may be provided to adjust the initial position of the gratings. The movement of the fringes can be recorded using a camera.
