Abstract
655,856. Optical benches. GEORGE & BECKER, Ltd., W. & J., and MORRIS, R. H. July 14, 1948, No. 18868. [Class 97 (i)] An optical bench comprises a slideway over which are slidably mounted saddles, each of which has rigid therewith a circular holder for an optical component, the centres of the holders being at the same height above the slideway so that the optical components carried thereby are located on a common optical axis. As shown, the bench consists of parallel guides 15 secured at the ends thereof in mounting blocks 16. Slidably mounted on the guides are saddles 18, each of which has at one end a bifurcated portion, the arms 18a of which are hooked over one guide 15 and are held thereon by a spring 19 carried underneath the saddle and pressing against the other side of said guide 15, and at the other end a recess from which projects a stud that rests on the other guide 15. Bolted to each saddle is a holder A, B, C or D, each incorporating an annular frame 17, the centres of which are at the same height above the guides 15; one saddle 18 carries an incandescent lamp 30. The holders A, C and D are similar and, as shown in Fig. 3, the annular frame 17 of each thereof is recessed at 17b. In this recess may be mounted a screen D1, Fig. 1, or an annulus A1 or C1 carrying centrally a pointer 23 or an object plate 25. The screen or annulus is held in its respective holder by a screw 20. The annular frame 17 of the holder B is also provided with a recess in which is turnably mounted an annulus 26 connected with the frame by a spring 28, Fig. 5. Pivoted to the frame 17 and annulus 26 are three arms 27, each provided with a grooved pad 27a for holding a lens or other optical component. The spring is so arranged as to tend to bring the pads 27a to a central position and a lens may be mounted in the holder by rotating the annulus 26 movably by means of a thumbpiece 26a and against the action of spring 28.
