Class 61 A toggle operated paper clamp adapted to hold a ream of paper, comprises a pair of hinged flat plate-like jaws s a threaded shaft pivoted between the free ends of a pair of lever arms depending from the upper jaw, a handle threadedly by engaging on the shaft toggle means connecting the shaft with upstanding members on the lower jaw and adjustable stop means to prevent the toggle from exceeding a position slightly beyond the dead centre position. As shown in Fig. 3 the upper jaw 4 is hinged at 9 to upright support members 2, 3 on the lower jaw 1. The threaded handle shaft 12 is pivoted at 14 to depending supports 11 on the jaw 4 and carries a threaded, hollow handle 15 used for adjusting the length of the shaft. A pair of toggle links 25 are pivoted at 26 to the support members 2, 3 on the jaw 1 and at 24 to a block slidably mounted on the shaft 12, the block being secured to the handle by a projecting lip 22 engaging in an annular groove in the handle. A cross member 28 connected to the toggle links 25 provides support for the adjustable stop screw 29, the shaft 12 abutting the screw 29 when the clamp is in locked position. The upper jaw is rounded and knurled at 8 to provide line contact with the lower jaw which is knurled at 7 and tapered at 5. In a modification, Fig. 5, the block 65 is clamped to the threaded hollow handle 60 by a frangible spring clamp ring 67: One end .of the toggle links 72 are pivoted to pins 71 on the block 65 the opposite ends of the links being pivoted at 73 to the lower jaw 41. A block 70 fixed to the end of the shaft 62 has projecting pins 50 which pivot in slots 49 in downwardly depending positions 46 of the upper jaw. A U-shaped spring 54 mounted on the upper jaw has legs 56 which bias the pins 50 towards the ends of the slots 49. A stop screw 75 is mounted directly beneath the toggle shaft.
