Class 64(3) Compressed air is cooled in passing through a plurality of spaced, parallel tubes 2 of flattened cross-section arranged within a casing through which flows a cooling liquid such as water, preferably in a sinuous path defined by baffles to which may also function as stiffener plates for the tubes. In. the form shown, side walls 8, 9 of the casing are detachable so that the external surfaces,of the tubes may be cleaned.
