Abstract

Shaped articles of a graft copolymer having cellulose acetate as the substrate are prepared by impregnating a shaped article of ungrafted cellulose acetate with an initiator of addition polymerization, and then exposing the object at an elevated temperature to the vapour of an addition polymerizable monomer diluted with a vapour that does not react under the conditions employed. Monomers specified are methyl methacrylate, acrylic ester, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides and styrene. The mixture of vapours employed is preferably obtained by boiling a liquid mixture of the monomer with an unreactive liquid of substantially the same vapour pressure, e.g. mixtures of methyl methacrylate with water and vinyl acetate or acrylonitrile with heptane. Polymerization initiators specified are hydrogen peroxide, potassium persulphate, benzoyl peroxide and azodiisobutyronitrile. The initiator is preferably used in solution in a liquid which has at least a swelling action on cellulose acetate. The cellulose acetate used may be in the form of a film, filament, fabric or moulded article.ALSO:A filament or fabric of cellulose acetate is modified with a grafted coating of a polymerized monomer by impregnating the filament or fabric with an initiator of addition polymerization, and then exposing the article to the vapour of a monomer diluted with a vapour that does not react under the conditions employed (see Group IV(a)). Monomers specified are acrylic esters, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides and styrene. The use of vinyl acetate and acrylonitrile improves the resistance of the treated article to ultraviolet light. When applied to fabrics the treatment causes interfusion of the yarns which yields a product suitable for use in decorative panels.
