Abstract

A vinyl polymer substrate is bonded with a polymerizable material consisting of at least one other vinyl compound which may be in monomeric or polymeric form by irradiating the substrate with ultraviolet light having a wavelength less than 4,000 A.U., contacting the substrate with a fluid phase, i.e. liquid or vapour, of the polymerizable compound whilst maintaining the irradiation so that graft polymerization is induced, the whole process being carried out in the substantial absence of free oxygen and without the use of a catalyst. Specified substrate polymers are polyethylene, polystyrene and acrylate ester polymers; specified vinyl monomers are ethyl and butyl acrylates and isobutylene, and polymers thereof capable of undergoing further polymerization.
