Abstract
1449814 Cellulosic/polymer composite materials UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 16 Oct 1973 [18 July 1972] 33616/72 Heading C3P A composite material is prepared by polymerizing a polymerizable liquid comprising a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer or a mixture of such monomers in a porous natural material comprising cellulosic fibre, the polymerizable liquid being in admixture, in the porous material, with a halogen derivative of a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon having from 22 to 30 carbon atoms. The polymerizable liquid may include a crosslinking agent, e.g. divinylbenzene or a di- or tri-methacrylate ester; an elastomer, e.g. polychloroprene or polybutadiene; a polymerization catalyst; and a dodecyl mercaptan. Useful monomers include acrylonitrile, styrene, methyl methacrylate, vinylidene chloride, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and vinyl acetate; styrene-acrylonitrile mixtures are preferred. Chloroparaffins are exemplified as the halogen derivative component. The porous cellulosic material is preferably a wood, e.g. ash, maple or sycamore, which may be in the form of veneers or of bulk timber. Polymerization is suitably effected with radiation, e.g. accelerated electrons, ultra-violet radiation, X-rays, gammarays or nuclear reactor radiation. The presence of the halogen derivative improves the fireresistance and other properties of the composite material and, where polymerization is effected with radiation, the halogen derivative reduces the dose of radiation required.
