Abstract

Addition polymers are obtained by polymerizing novel esters of perfluoroalkanoic acids and hydroxyalkyl acrylates or methacrylates, the perfluoroalkyl chain containing 3 to 20 carbon atoms. The polymers may be homopolymers or co-polymers of the esters with other polymerizable monomers, e.g. methyl methacrylate, and are useful, e.g. in the form of solutions in a solvent such as trichlorotrifluoroethane, for treating textile materials, glass, paper and other solid materials to impart water- and oilrepellant properties thereto. The polymerization may be carried out in the presence of a free-radical-producing initiator, e.g. benzoyl peroxide or potassium persulphate, in emulsion systems or in bulk, or by applying the monomer to material to be treated and polymerizing it in situ. In examples, the preparation is described of homopolymers of ethylene glycol monomethacrylate monoperfluoro-octanoate and ethylene glycol monomethacrylate monoperfluoro-isobutyrate.ALSO:Novel esters of perfluoroalkanoic acids and hydroxyalkyl acrylates and methacrylates, the perfluoroalkyl chain containing 3 to 20 carbon atoms, are prepared by reacting hydroxyalkyl acrylates or methacrylates with perfluoroalkanoic acids or their chlorides, anhydrides or lower alkyl esters. The esters and their addition polymers (see Division C3) impart oil-and water-repellency properties to materials and surfaces to which they are applied (see Division B2 and D1).ALSO:Surfaces, e.g. glass, paper or textile materials, are coated with an oil- or water-repellant polymer derived from an ester of a perfluoroalkanoic acid and a hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate, the perfluoroalkyl chain containing 3 to 20 carbon atoms. The polymer may be applied in the form of a solution, e.g. in 1, 1, 2, trichloro-1, 2, 2-trifluoroethane, or an aqueous emulsion or it may be formed in situ by polymerisation of the monomer. The polymer may be a homopolymer or a co-polymer, e.g. with methyl methacrylate.ALSO:Textile materials, e.g. cotton or wool, are given oil- or water-repelling properties by treatment with an ester of a perfluoroalkanoic acid and a hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate, the perfluoroalkyl chain containing 3 to 20 carbon atoms, or a polymer thereof. After application of the ester, it may be polymerised in situ or the polymer may be applied directly in the form of a solution, e.g. in 1, 1, 2-trichloro-1, 2, 2-trifluoroethane, or an aqueous emulsion. The polymer may be a homopolymer or a co-polymer, e.g. with methyl methacrylate.
