In a process of making steel bars or profiles of ferrous or steel alloys by rolling, continuouscast products having rectangular or oval crosssections with a thickness/breadth ratio between 1 : 1.5 and 1: 4 are heated to the rolling temperature and are then subjected to at least one reduction on edge with the workpiece on edge prior to rolling to steel bars or profiles in known manner. Rolling from rectangular or oval crosssection is said to improve the grain structure.
