Abstract

864,622. Contacting liquids with gases. FLUOR CORPORATION Ltd. Nov. 22,1957, No. 36438/57. Class 55 (2). [Also in Group XIII] Packing for a gas-liquid contact apparatus, comprises a series of horizontal units 19, Fig. 2, each of which has thin sheet-like vertical strips 20, 21 forming open cells 22, the strips being integrally moulded from organic plastic material and carrying integrally moulded laterally extending projections 30. The cells 22 are square and spacers 23, Fig. 4, which are integral with the strips 20, 21 and occupy the area of two cells 22, project downwardly a distance equal to the height of the strips 20, 21 to engage an adjacent unit 19 for providing spaces 126 between the units. Sides 24, 25 of the spacers 23 are downwardly tapered so that the units 19 may be stacked in nested engagement for storage. On assembling the units 19 in a contact apparatus, adjacent units are oriented so that side 24 of one unit overlies, and extends at right-angles to, the side 24 of the unit next below, as in Fig. 4. The top edges of sides 24 are notched at 26 and strips 21 adjacent thereto are notched at 27 to receive the bottom of the spacer 23 above, so that the grids of adjacent units 19 are offset relative to one another. Each side 24, 25 may have an inturned bottom flange 28 and transverse stiffeners 29 may be provided. Each strip 20, 21 is of T-section with a slight downward taper of the limbs. The corners of the units 19 are so formed that recesses 32 occur to locate corner posts of the contact apparatus. In a modification, Fig. 8, the strips 35 form hexagonal cells 36 and the spacers 38 are of the shape shown.
