Abstract
1,247,340. Trays. B. M. MARCAN. 20 Nov., 1968 [21 Nov., 1967], No. 52960/67. Heading B8P. A tray for garden produce has a rectangular base with a wall extending upwardly from each side thereof and elements applied to the four corners thereof for supporting a second identical tray placed on top, each such support element consisting of a one-piece moulding of synthetic plastics material applied as a push fit over the tops of the end portions of two side walls where they meet in a corner and so that once applied they cannot readily slip off the walls: In a first construction, Fig. 2, the tray is collapsible in that the side walls 1 thereof can be folded flat on to the bottom 2, both the walls and the bottom being formed with strengthening ridges 3. The side walls are connected together at the corners by detachable means each of which consists of a main outer part 4 which is L-shaped in cross-section and which has on the free vertical edges thereof inwardly directed flanges 5 which, in use, engage in vertical grooves 6 formed in the walls 1 near the opposite ends thereof to prevent the elements slipping off the walls; inside the part 4 near the upper end thereof is a horizontal shelf 7 and depending from the free inner edge thereof is a vertical web 8 the side edges of which lie within but do not touch the flanges 5; the web 8 is deeper than the main outer part 4 and is supported by a diagonal web 9 which extends from the angle of the main outer part 4 to the centre of the web 8. A second construction is described in which the tray is made of cardboard with four sides and a bottom, the sides being connected by corner elements which are a modification of that described above in that for each corner element the webs 8 and 9 are omitted and instead a part which is L-shaped in cross-section depends from the shelf 7 so that deep grooves are provided. The vertical edges of the inner part are spaced from the flanges 5 so that when the element is assembled to the side walls the cardboard is distorted. In a third construction, the tray instead of having side walls which can be folded flat has side walls which incline towards the bottom so that the trays can be nested one inside the other and at each corner a detachable cap element is provided; each cap element is of triangular shape having an L-shaped groove in its underside for receiving the side walls with a tight push fit and a recess 34 in its upper side for locating the bottom corner of a like tray placed on top. Except for the tray which has a cardboard bottom and walls, the various parts can be made from synthetic plastics material.
