[Also in Division F4] A packing for apparatus wherein a film of liquid is caused to flow in contact with a gas or vapour, e.g. as in a cooling tower, or in a chemical, distillation, absorption or biological oxidation process, comprises a plurality of corrugated plate elements A and B, Fig. 1, which when considered in a vertical plane have successive portions B2 and B3 which curve in opposite directions with respect to a vertical axis through the element, and extend beyond said axis, these portions being joined by other portions 1 which cross the axis. These portions 1 may be flat as shown or curved. Adjacent plates may be staggered in the vertical direction to provide continuous changes in the cross section of the flow path between adjacent plates. The packing elements may be in the form of two integral side-by-side corrugated strips, Fig. 2, with adjacent strips being out of register. Portions G and H serve as sitiffeners and two such elements may be joined back-to-back by marginal portions 2. Batches of plates may be arranged one above the other (I and II in Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), the lower plate edges of the uppermost batch being notched to receive the upper plate edges of the next lower batch. The members A and B may 'be of synthetic plastic material, sheet metal, asbestos cement or graphite. Each plate element may have a surface formed to present a multiplicity of cells as described in Specification 942,536, and two such sheets may be joined back-to-back to form a composite sheet indented on both sides.
