996,465. Cooling liquids by direct contact with gases. FLUOR CORPORATION. Nov. 27, 1962 [May 28, 1962], No. 44779/62. Heading F4K. [Also in Division B1] A grid for use as packing in a water-cooling tower comprises strips 20 and 21 (Fig. 2), the upper edges of the strips being formed with flanges 23 and arranged to lie in an outwardly curved plane. The grids are integrally moulded of a plastics material, possibly comprising a number of flat parallel sections arranged at a slight angle to each other. In use the grids are placed one above the other as shown in Fig. 5, projections 30 on an upper grid engaging in recesses 31 in the grid below. To prevent downward deflection of the grids the corners of each grid may be recessed and engage with vertical posts 35 (Fig. 2). Horizontal bars 136 may extend between posts 35 to support the lowermost grid of a series. Further support to the grids may be given by a strut (not shown) extending centrally of the lowermost grid and by struts (not shown) extending obliquely between bars 136. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 8, the grids may be supported on hangers 40.
