Abstract

<PICT:0845369/III/1> A grid for supporting filling bodies in a tower comprises spaced parallel bars 1 (Fig. 3), the upper edges of each bar being serrated or notched with uniformly spaced teeth or notches and the bars arranged so that a crest of a serration in any bar faces a trough of a serration in an adjacent bar. The bars may be serrated with rectangular, trapezoidal N triangular teeth and troughs or with an undulation. The filling bodies may be the packing of a gas-liquid contact tower or be catalyst bodies and in use the distance between the bars is not greater than the smallest dimension of the filling bodies. The distance between the centres of adjacent crests or troughs of the bars is preferably not greater than twice the smallest dimension of the packing bodies to be supported.
